Learn Astrology Series: Chiron

In astrology, Chiron is a minor planet (originally classified as an asteroid but later discovered to have comet-like characteristics). Chiron, a mythical centaur, was known for being a skilled Healer, Astrologer, Teacher, Mentor and Tutor to many famous heroes like Achilles, Jason, Hercules and Asclepius (ancient Greek God of Medicine and Healing). Unlike other centaurs who were depicted as wild and brutish, Chiron was known for his wisdom, kindness, and mastery of various arts.

In Natal Chart delineation, Chiron's placement and aspects can reveal areas of life where individuals may struggle with deep wounds and also hold the potential for growth and healing. I’ve often heard its location on the Birth Chart also represents where we have the ability to be Maverick and a Wounded Healer.

Chiron is wounded twice in mythology.  When his mother rejects him and abandons him because he is half-human and half-horse. Her reasons for abandoning him may also include the fact that she became pregnant after being raped by a Greek God. He learns to live with the pain and sorrow of rejection and abandonment. The second wound is a poison arrow. Chiron was mistakenly and deeply wounded by a poison arrow and had to learn to live with the physical pain since he was immortal and could not die. Chiron teaches us how to carry the pain that will not heal. Like grief.

I think of Nora McInerny, who gave a Ted Talk on Grief a couple of years ago. She lost her father, husband and unborn child all within a two-month period. Imagine that for a moment. Heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, unbearable pain. When lose this great is experience, we must search deep into unknown places within our own consciousness to tap into the places where true strength exists. Chiron helps us find that place within. The fountain where strength is found to get up in the morning when you just don’t want too anymore. The place where we find a reason to live, to fight and keep going when the reason has been taken from us. Chiron is half human and half animal; we learn tap into the deepest natural instinct inside of us that is both human and animal. We find our will to live.

I’ve experienced Chiron in client’s charts, as both physical pain and deep, emotional/spiritual wounding. I have three examples to share. The first example is that of a physical injury. On the person’s astrology chart a fatal accident that was destined to happen is shown, and the physical injuries to the bodies of those involved was also shown. The chart reveals the destined event as well as the potential for spiritual growth because of what happened. One person died and the other stayed alive. The person left alive had to learn to live with the physical pain of the injury as well as the emotional/spiritual aftermath of the loss of the other person.

In the second example, Chiron transits the person’s first house and Ascendant (usually symbolic of the physical body), and the person experiences a physical injury in the lower part of the body. The injury can not be healed by doctors,  therefore the person has to learn to live with the excruciating, physical pain “that comes and goes.”

The last example is a synastry analysis. Synastry is when an Astrologer takes a look at two persons’ Natal Charts and analyses the relationship potential (strengths, weaknesses, lessons, etc.) between the two people. In the synastry analysis, person one’s Sun is conjunct Chiron on person’s two chart. Person two (Chiron) experiences the pain of rejection and abandonment from person one (Sun). The person with Chiron will learn the spiritual lesson of overcoming rejection, abandonment, and the grief of the loss of the relationship while the person with the Sun will learn the consequences of their actions on one another. Both grow greatly from the experience. The person with the Chiron on their chart expresses the inability to “get over the relationship.”

Chiron is somewhere in all of our Natal Charts. In addition, Chiron will transit all of our birth charts at some point in our lifetime. When Chiron contacts occur, we have an opportunity to find the true power and strength of our Spirit. We can learn to rise above unbearable suffering and pain. As optimistic as I am, Chiron has taught me in years of analyzing client’s charts that there are deep wounds that will never heal and can only be learned to deal with. Just like Nora from the Ted Talk, there is no healing for such deep grief. There is only learning to live with grief, pain and suffering. One day at a time. One moment at a time. One breath at a time.

Chiron invites us to become our own Teachers, Healers and Mentors. Chiron helps us discover the strength of our Soul and allow the Light of Spirit to beam through all the darkness of the world so we may become a Light to others. May you find the Light, Courage and Strength of your Spirit. May you rise above all challenges, obstacles and suffering, and come into the place within you where you are unbreakable and immortal.
