Mercury in Sagittarius 2024

Mercury enters the sign of Sagittarius today. Although Mercury in Sagittarius is in detriment according to Astrological dignity, Mercury entering a fire sign this weekend, can feel like a breath of fresh air after the intense watery tension built up during the Mercury in Scorpio season. We can take a moment to exhale. However, the energies of the Mars Pluto opposition are intense this weekend and can lead to communication issues, arguments, disagreements and misunderstandings. Watch your tongue. Speak from the wisdom in your heart.

Mercury, the planet of communication, the mind, travel and commerce, has a difficult time expressing its natural tendencies in Sagittarius. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter. Although both planets seek truth, Mercury seeks facts, news and information while Jupiter seeks wisdom and creative storytelling. Mercury teaches us about discernment while Jupiter teaches us about faith. Mercury focuses on the details while Jupiter focuses on the bigger, ever expansive picture.

It is interesting that Mercury will be in Sagittarius through the United States election. It may be that one side will argue that the other has lied, cheated or stolen. Mercury rules lies and thieves, and since Mercury is in detriment and is about to go retrograde (which can add more stress, tension and misunderstandings), we can expect these issues to show up post-election.

What is also interesting is that Jupiter, which rules Justice, the King/Queen of the land and the Law, is in the sign of Gemini. Both planets, Mercury and Jupiter are in detriment according to Astrological dignity. Detriment makes it hard for the planet to express its highest potential. Therefore, it is likely that we will not be able to see truth and justice clearly at this time. There will be arguments on the election outcome. The Supreme Court and higher courts are likely to get involved. The public and the media may have difficulty keeping up with the facts and the truth.

On a more personal level, Mercury in Sagittarius is a positive influence for all Fire and Air Signs, so notice what placements you have in these signs in your chart. While Mercury is in Sagittarius we can focus on new aspirations. We can begin new journeys and new adventures. However, we must be careful not to be wanderlust or keep our head too high in the clouds. We must not be blinded by faith and ignore the facts of the real world. We can dream. Yes. But we must be grounded and make dreams into goals in order to accomplish them.  We can ground ourselves in reality as we focus our attention forward. We can live in the present moment as we walk into the future. This is a powerful time to think about your next steps, goals and narrow in on your future plans. Hold a clear vision of your future and be willing to take the action steps necessary to get there.

An Astrology Teacher of mine once said, that Sagittarius is the sign of the cowboy/cowgirl. I love that image for this moment in time. Imagine yourself getting up from the floor, shaking the dirt off, pulling yourself from the bootstraps and getting on top on your horse one more time. Giddy-up, let's go!
